Helpful Apps to Try

You know how you have that friend that always has cool apps that do things and they are always ready to show you and share? Well, that’s what this page is for, but it is to help you grow spiritually. And if you don’t see one that YOU have found extra-helpful, drop us a line on our Contact Page and let us know. We may include it here for everyone else’s benefit.

These apps may not be viewable on your laptop or desktop, but all can be downloaded to a tablet or smartphone by searching for the app title in your preferred app service.

The following are free apps.

Mass Times…….This app will help you find Sunday Mass, daily Mass, confession and adoration times when you travel. Note that distances quoted are point to point, not travel time.

Holy Bible…..This app was developed by an Evangelical church but has lots of Catholic content. There are multiple Catholic versions including the NABRE and the version Fr Mike Schmitz uses. Also in multiple Spanish translations. The study plans also include Catholic content among the mix.

Catholic Confession…..This app provides multiple examinations of conscience, a place to remind you of sins you want to mention in confession and a calendar reminder page which also keeps track of how long it has been since your last confession.

Mary…..If you have never learned to say the rosary, or if you have difficulty remembering the mysteries, this is a perfect app for you. Not only does it give great instruction, but you can actually pray with a human voice leading you! Presented by the Marians of the Immaculate Conception.

Divine Mercy…..Also provided by the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, this app takes you through the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy with or without voice. Our Lord gave this devotion to St Faustina and has asked all of us to pray it daily. The entire chaplet takes about 5 minutes to pray out loud.

iBreviary…..This free app is what most of the priests we know use for the daily Prayer of the Church. It is produced by the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land and the Pro Terra Sancta Association. Free, but they appreciate donations.

The next set of apps are combination apps and are free or one-time charge. These apps provide various materials and prayers, some of which are duplicates of the apps above.

Catholic Mega App…..Mega is the right word for this very robust app. The rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Daily Mass prayers all here. Plus, it has links to many of the best sites for Catholic news all around the world. Well worth the cost! Oh sorry, it is a free app!

Laudate…..Another free app that is actually the top Catholic app on the iOS app store. Very robust with lots of Catholic prayers you may have trouble finding elsewhere.

iPieta…..This app currently indicates that it is free but it was a one-time fee of $.99. Yes, 99 cents. This one is just terrific for learning the faith. It has multiple catechisms including the Baltimore and Trent versions. Also calendars for Traditional and Novus Ordo Masses. Tap the “V” for teaching material.

Two other very popular apps are also a bit pricy, but they have free versions that let you use some of their material for no upfront costs. They are “AMEN”, put out by the Augustine Institute and “Hallow” produced by Hallow, Inc. Each has a niche and you should try them if you don’t find what you are looking for in the apps listed above. Just understand that even if you choose the free versions you will be continually encouraged to move up to the paid subscriptions.

Bible-In-A-Year Fr Mike Schmitz of Ascension Press fame has two podcasts, one for the Bible in a year and the other for the Catechism in a year. The Bible is narrated if you want it. The Catechism is read along only. Free at this time. (Thanks for the recommendation, Collette!)

For great Catholic Talk Radio, you cannot beat Relevant Radio. Available on your computer, as an app or for some of you, on a local AM/FM station. I guarantee that you will learn something new every single day you listen. Broadcasts out of Indianapolis so the times for Angelus, Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Mass are an hour off for those of us in the Eastern time zone

If there is an app you really enjoy, that is available on both the Apple app store and the Google play store, then please let us know by filling out the contact form here.
